Alphabet, the parent company of Google, is cutting around 12,000 jobs, or 6% of its global workforce due to the economic conditions caused by the pandemic. CEO Sundar Pichai said that the company had hired for a different economic reality and that the layoffs will be felt globally and across the entire company.
Pichai also said that employees will be paid during the full notification period of 60 days minimum and will be offered severance packages starting at 16 weeks salary plus two weeks for every additional year at Google, accelerate at least 16 weeks of GSU vesting, pay 2022 bonuses and remaining vacation time, while offering 6 months of healthcare, job placement services, and “immigration support for those affected.”
Google has also been cutting other expenses like shutting down Stadia, cancelling the next-generation Pixelbook laptops and more and planning to focus more on AI.
These layoffs are very unfortunate. Many people are losing their jobs as well. But what are your views about this layoff. Could this layoffs be avoided by the companies or whatever they have done is right? Mention your views in the comments below….
